The characteristics of the traditional American workplace are changing at a tremendous rate with the arrival of an increasing number of Hispanic immigrants. Differences in language, customs, and behaviors have created an entirely new set of challenges for many businesses.

Apprehension, stemming from the language barrier and cultural ignorance, always exists between two culturally distinct groups and can often cause tension which adversely affects the stability and fluidity of the workforce. When introduced into the American work environment, Latino immigrants are almost always intimidated by the different customs and inability to communicate.

Although willing to work hard, Hispanic employees often feel isolated from the rest of the company, remaining reserved and wary of interacting with management and other employees. At the same time, English-speaking employees are often apprehensive of these new-comers, being that their customs and language are just as strange to them.


With the tightened labor market that we have experienced of the last several years, many industries have grown to depend heavily upon the availability and eagerness of the Hispanic immigrants who compose a significant part of our workforces.


The positive aspects of this phenomenon are many. We receive a very willing and loyal group of people who take their jobs very seriously.

However, we are now faced with new challenges: the challenge of understanding them, communicating with them, and integrating them into our workforces. Unless we are willing to face these challenges, we might never be able to tap into the fullest potential of our hispanic employees.
